Gateway Center and The Brooklyn Arts Council announce commissioned artist and new Gateway Artwalk

Abby Goldstein created eleven panels to hang along the center’s walkway, now formally known as Gateway ArtWalk.

Gateway Center, developed by Related Companies and one of the preeminent shopping destinations in New York City, today announced it has commissioned artist Abby Goldstein to create a series of art installations titled “Ebb and Flow” at the Gateway Center in Brooklyn, which was installed last week. Related, along with the Brooklyn Arts Council, sought an artist to create a two-dimensional work that would complement the surrounding space and establish congruency between the North and South sides of the more than one-million-square-foot shopping and dining complex and add to Related’s commitment to art and culture across the portfolio of developments.

“We are thrilled to have such a talented artist coming to the Gateway Center,” said Avi Kollenscher, senior vice president at Related Companies. “Art and culture have always played an integral role in all of our developments. Abby’s work comprises eleven panels, which will hang in the walkway at Gateway Center connecting the North and South sides, to bring the space together, adding a beautiful art component to the dynamic complex and incorporating a compelling visual display to the overall destination. It is sure to delight and engage visitors for years to come.”

“It is so gratifying to collaborate with organizations like Related Companies and the Gateway Center that recognize the role public art can have in improving and enhancing our communities,” said Charlotte A. Cohen, executive director of Brooklyn Arts Council. “We look forward to seeing how the community responds to Abby's installation, and to even more public artworks from Brooklyn-based artists in the years to come.”

The newly commissioned artist for Gateway ArtWalk, Abby Goldstein, said, “The location, natural ecosystem and changing geography surrounding Gateway Center are the inspiration for my exhibit. The proximity to the ocean, marshland and the Gateway National Recreation Area is a distinctive feature adjacent to this site. The eleven panels in this installation refer to the ebb and flow of tides along the Spring Creek shoreline.”

Gateway Center is located off the Belt Parkway near Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY and includes retailers such as Nordstrom Rack, Marshalls, Target and Pier 1 Imports. At more than one million square feet, The North side of the shopping center is home to a beautiful garden area curated in partnership with Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and the South side has a small garden area adjacent to the new Gateway ArtWalk.

The complex is LEED Silver-certified and the second phase was completed in 2014, bringing an entirely new shopping and dining destination to Brooklyn. Related’s commission of artist Abby Goldstein is yet another example of their continued commitment to art and culture throughout their portfolio of residential, retail and mixed-use developments.
