New renderings unveiled for Willets Point, a once-in-a-generation 100% affordable neighborhood

On May 10th, Related, Sterling Equities and New York City Football Club (NYCFC) presented a first look at Willets Point's new renderings to Queens Community Board 7. The exciting vision for the new affordable neighborhood and stadium reflects ongoing support from the community, local elected officials, union leaders, business community members and more. Willets Point's plan to introduce 2,500 affordable residences designates it as the city's largest 100% affordable development in 40 years, with future residents enjoying access to a pedestrian-friendly main street, active open common areas and over 40,000 square feet of public open space. Willets Point will also bring the first-ever 25,000-seat soccer-specific stadium to New York City, which will be the home of NYCFC and the club's charity foundation, City in the Community (CITC).

Related Midwest announces rehabilitation and new park for affordable community Poplar Place

On May 4th, Related Midwest and nonprofit partner Capital City Coalition, NFP unveiled a comprehensive plan to preserve and rehabilitate 100 affordable residences at Poplar Place in Springfield, IL. The 23-acre community will undergo a positive transformation with revitalized modern homes, featuring new kitchens and bathrooms, energy-efficient appliances, new lighting and new heating systems. Structural improvements to residences will include new roofing, windows and exterior siding, as well as new one-car garages for each of the 50 single-family homes. Residents will also receive a new community center and playground, which will provide them and their families new spaces to come together in the neighborhood.

Jeff Blau honored at Win's annual gala

On May 3rd, Related CEO Jeff Blau was commemorated at nonprofit Win's annual Way to Win Gala, which acknowledged Blau and Related's longstanding commitment to affordable housing. In 2021, Related partnered with Win to offer personalized on-site social services to residents of The Harriet Tubman Building in Far Rockaway, Queens, including providing mental and behavioral health services, counseling, education opportunities, job programs and more. Related supports Win's mission to provide supportive housing and services to New Yorkers who need it most.

Related Affordable Foundation and KABOOM! unveil community playspace in San Antonio

On April 14th, Related Affordable Foundation and nonprofit KABOOM! held a community celebration for a new playspace at the River Trails Apartments in San Antonio, Texas. The ribbon cutting was also attended by San Antonio City Council District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran, as well as San Antonio Football Club players Justin Dhillon and Juan Carlos Azocar. The playspace includes a brand new soccer field, built with the help of San Antonio Football Club, as well as a basketball court, with the support of the San Antonio Spurs. More than 100 residents and volunteers helped build the playspace, which was dreamt up by children in the community during a design day event earlier this year. 

Affordable housing was a great opportunity. It molded me into the person that I am today.

We started exclusively as an affordable housing developer in 1972, and today, we are one of the largest developers and preservationists of affordable and workforce housing in the country. Currently, we own and manage 55,000 affordable and workforce housing apartment homes and we are proud to have never converted a single unit of affordable housing to market rate.

Park Club Apartments partners with local nonprofit and undergoes comprehensive renovations

Related Affordable is nearing completion of the renovation of Park Club Apartments. The Related Affordable Foundation has partnered with the Zoological Society of Milwaukee to allow the youngest residents of the property to enjoy educational activities at the Milwaukee Zoo, organizing special classes and visits year-round.

This fall, Related Affordable Foundation and nonprofit KABOOM! celebrated the creation of a kid-designed playspace at Southern Hills, which provides an active, social and safe place for kids to have fun and express themselves.

Together with LR Contracting Company and Bowa Construction, Related Midwest broke ground on 900 Randolph in Chicago on November 4th. When completed, 900 Randolph will introduce 300 residences to the Fulton Market neighborhood—with 20 percent to be designated as affordable.

Co-developed by Related Northwest and non-profit Central City Concern, Cedar Commons has opened in East Portland, offering permanently-supportive housing to some of the most vulnerable local residents. Central City Concern will also provide residents with on-site services such as mental health services and employment support and training.

Affordable development Willets Point breaks ground in Queens

The city officially broke ground on the environmental cleanup efforts needed for the Willets Point redevelopment in Queens. The project is being undertaken by a pair of developers called Queens Development Group, which includes Related Companies and Sterling Equities.
