Related Companies announces opening of "High Line Nine," West Chelsea’s newest gallery spaces

Full-service and highly amenitized exhibition spaces are located beneath the High Line and adjacent to 520 West 28th, Zaha Hadid’s first residential development in New York City.

Related Companies today announced the opening of "High Line Nine," West Chelsea’s most anticipated new gallery spaces. Located beneath the High Line and adjacent to Zaha Hadid’s first residential development in New York City, 520 West 28th Street, High Line Nine brings emerging A-list talent to New York City’s cultural coast. Spotlighting a unique collection of gallerists in a dynamic, experimental, industry-leading format, studioMDA—an international architecture firm founded by Markus Dochantschi—brings gallery spaces within High Line Nine that range from 650 square feet to 1,800 square feet.

The acclaimed Kasmin premieres as an anchoring gallerist with a 5,000 square foot space, also built by studioMDA, outfitted with a programmable landscaped rooftop sculpture garden and connected to an additional gallery within High Line Nine. Joining Kasmin within High Line Nine will be Chelsea’s own Leila Heller Gallery and Hollis Taggart Gallery, New York and San Francisco-based Burning in Water, New York’s ZieherSmith, Miami’s Valli Art Gallery and fine art foundry and fabrication studio Polich Tallix.

High Line Nine will also feature il Piccolo Ristoro, a café and wine bar serving authentic Italian caffé, paninis, gelato and freshly made pastries, operated by one of the founders of Via Quadronno. "The new High Line Nine project is an innovative addition to the changing art world and meets the needs of the current times. It is similar to a permanent art fair, allowing easy access and visibility and the opportunity to see several leading art dealers with varying inventory under one roof, in the heart of Chelsea, surrounded by great restaurants and hotels. This is a wonderful new addition to the New York art scene,” said Hollis Taggart, founder of Hollis Taggart Gallery.

Referencing concepts similar to those overseas such as Condo London, a co-op exchange program, High Line Nine is responding to an analogous market need. Earl Bateman, licensed real estate broker and long-time partner committed to real estate representation for the arts, diligently worked alongside Related to create a package offering all-inclusive amenities, providing gallerists a turnkey solution for their spaces unlike any format in the contemporary New York landscape. More than a lease, each High Line Nine Membership encompasses a multitude of benefits incorporating various costs associated with leasing into one monthly fee.

Members will have hassle-free access to their fully built-out galleries with an economical approach to onsite amenities including collective PR, advertising and events, access to a full-service catering kitchen, cleaning of common areas, rubbish removal, security, maintenance, WiFi and utilities. Gallerists can even remotely monitor their spaces via an app for their security cameras. With this industry leading format, High Line Nine streamlines the process of acquiring and managing a space so it is seamless and simple.

Greg Gushee, Related executive vice president and key player in the project’s conceptualization, said, “The development of the High Line Nine is part of Related Companies’ ongoing commitment to preserve and enhance the cultural character of West Chelsea and further expand the art and cultural neighborhood coming to life at Hudson Yards.” Inspired by European gallerias, the concept was first announced in March of 2017, accrediting High Line Nine as a vibrant hub where gallery-goers, neighborhood residents and tourists alike could experience art, architecture and design culture in the heart of the new West Chelsea.

The collection of galleries will also feature five other adjacent gallery spaces in addition to High Line Nine, bringing new vibrancy and added value to the area surrounding recently developed 520 West 28th by Zaha Hadid, extrapolating the cultural destination in one of Manhattan’s most desirable neighborhoods and putting multitudes of potential art buyers within blocks of these galleries once Hudson Yards is complete. “With the High Line Nine, we have reinvented the European arcade model to make it about art. It is a new typology—a hybrid between a museum, gallery, art fair and showroom. It is also a grand public space where people of all types can stroll, mingle and take in culture,” says Markus Dochantschi, founder of studioMDA. “The façade is the building's crowning achievement. Fabricated of white bronze using both traditional casting methods and state-of-the-art computer modeling, it is a testament to the collaboration between architect and artisan.”

The High Line park atop this collection of galleries promises its 6 million annual visitors within proximity of the newly opened High Line Nine, anticipating it as a must-see destination for all visitors of West Chelsea. Onlookers will be able to walk The High Line, descend to street level to visit new galleries on West 28th Street, enter High Line Nine to visit the galleries within and stop at il Piccolo Ristoro for a quick meal or glass of wine before exiting onto West 27th Street to further explore Manhattan West’s latest in galleries. High Line Nine is now open to the public for viewing, with in-house gallery exhibitions launching throughout the remainder of the month of September. With flexible membership terms, High Line Nine anticipates an exciting roster of gallerists, exhibitions and events in the coming months.

About Kasmin:
Founded in SoHo in 1989, Kasmin cultivates a program in which historic Post-War and Modernist figures are in meaningful dialogue with the evolving practice of both emerging and established contemporary artists. With three spaces in Chelsea, New York, the gallery mounts ambitious concurrent exhibitions alongside participation in major art fairs worldwide. In fall 2018, the gallery will open its newest and largest space at 509 West 27th Street, which will expand the gallery’s footprint and provide a platform to build upon our curatorial mission. The new building will also feature a planted roof purposefully designed for exhibiting monumental sculptures, which parallels the gallery’s well-known engagement in international public art projects.

About Leila Heller Gallery:
Since its establishment over three decades ago, Leila Heller Gallery has gained worldwide recognition as a pioneer in promoting creative dialogue and exchange, bridging the gap between Western and Eastern aesthetics with locations in both New York and Dubai—currently, one of the largest institutions of art between London and Hong Kong, standing at 14,000 square feet. Since moving to its flagship space in Chelsea from the Upper East Side, Leila Heller Gallery has garnered a reputation for identifying and cultivating an international program of artists who, with their careers and projects, leave a lasting impact on contemporary visual culture. Earlier this year, such projects include the first ever three-part consecutive show in the Chelsea district by artist Rachel Lee Hovnanian titled The Women’s Trilogy Project, among several additional off-site programs. In presenting a dynamic exhibition schedule, the gallery actively organizes shows with world-renowned curators, hosting educational panels and film screenings and producing catalogues and books with scholarly essays.

For nearly 40 years, the gallery has offered significant works of American art—showcasing the trajectory of American art movements from the Hudson River School to American Modernism and Post-War and Contemporary eras—and curated countless critically acclaimed shows in collaboration with the foremost leaders in the field. In the summer of 2015, Hollis Taggart opened its first space in Chelsea, moving from the Upper East Side where it had been operating since its inception. In fall 2018, Hollis Taggart will move to the street-level space at 521 West 26th Street and open a private viewing and storage annex across the street, fully consolidating its operations in Chelsea. Together, the spaces provide Hollis Taggart with nearly 4,000 square feet to host exhibitions and engage clients with select works of art in its inventory, while improving ease of access between its locations. Today, the gallery’s program has grown to encompass contemporary practitioners as a vital component to art historical discourse. It also continues to show significant works of historic American art with a particular focus on the Post-War era. These two intersecting threads offer Hollis Taggart’s audiences and clients a dynamic and diverse set of offerings. In addition to its public program, the gallery also advises private collectors, corporations and museums on acquisitions and assists its clients in the development of their personal collections.
