On September 24, Related Affordable Foundation, Related Affordable and KABOOM! celebrated the construction of two newly rebuilt playspaces and a community garden at Gateway Apartments, a 365-unit affordable housing community in Far Rockaway that is home to more than 150 children. New York State Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato of District 23 joined Related Affordable Foundation, KABOOM!, residents, and community members for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the new spaces. This effort marks the ninth collaboration between Related Affordable Foundation and KABOOM! and the first playground build within NYC's five boroughs.

Built by 130 volunteers, the playspaces offer safe, beautiful and high-quality places where kids can play within their community. Additionally, the on-site community garden presents a peaceful place where residents can unwind and connect outdoors.

In just three days, volunteers:

  • Built six garden beds and hauled roughly 6,400 pounds of soil
  • Built a playground for children ages 2–5 at Neilson Ave., complete with two hopscotch games and a number caterpillar
  • Built a playground for children ages 5–12 at Mott Ave.
  • Mixed and moved 16,800 pounds of concrete.

The result: three new outdoor spaces—two playgrounds and a community garden—that Gateway residents will enjoy for years to come. Thank you to all the volunteers from Related, our partners and the community for bringing this vision to life!
